My camera roll got dumb over the past year. Screenshots, burst shots, duplicate memes, old 4K clips, the usual mess. I was sitting on roughly 40,000 photos and videos, so I went through a pile of iPhone cleaner apps. Most of them felt the same. Scan your library, wave a few features in front of you, then slam a subscription wall in your face.
The one I kept reinstalling was Clever Cleaner.
What stuck with me was the duplicate detection. A lot of these apps throw loosely related photos into one stack, so you still end up checking each image by hand. I saw less of that here. It did a better job sorting true duplicates and near-duplicates without turning the process into babysitting.
The storage preview helped too. Before I deleted anything, I could see how much space was going back to the phone. Small thing, but it matters when you don’t want to nuke stuff blindly.
The Heavies section was the part I used most. It pulled up old videos fast, and those were the main storage hogs in my library. Some of them were eating tens of gigs by themselves once everything added up. The Live Photo cleanup tool also cleared more space than I expected. I kind of ignored Live Photos before testing this, then noticed how much junk was sitting there.
Speed matters more than people admit. A few other cleaners dragged through the scan and felt rough once the library got big. This one finished faster on my phone and didn’t choke on a huge collection. I’d split this into two parts, because a lot of “iPhone cleaner” apps oversell what iOS even lets them do.
They do not clear system junk like a Mac app would. Apple locks most of that down. So if your phone is slow, a cleaner app helps mostly by trimming photo clutter, big videos, duplicate files, and some contact junk. If you expect a one-tap RAM fixer, nah, that’s marketing.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on one point, Clever Cleaner is one of the few free ones worth trying. My take is a bit less glowing, though. No cleaner app fixed slow performance on my phone by itself. What helped was freeing 15 to 20GB, then rebooting, then checking Safari downloads, Messages attachments, and Files app junk. That combo made more diffrence than the app alone.
If you want a free option, start with Clever Cleaner. Use it for duplicates, similar pics, and large videos. Then go to:

Review Messages, Safari, Files, Voice Memos, and offline media in Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, etc.

I’d temper expectations a bit. @mikeappsreviewer and @reveurdenuit are right that Clever Cleaner is probably the best free iPhone cleaner app if your main problem is photo/video clutter, but “improving performance” is where these apps get a little hand-wavy.
Cleaner apps on iPhone mostly help by removing duplicate photos, similar shots, giant videos, and sometimes duplicate contacts. That can absolutely help if your storage is nearly maxed out, because iPhones get weirdly sluggish when free space gets too low. But they are not really scrubbing hidden junk the way people imagine.
My slightly diffrent take: if your phone is still slow after deleting stuff, check battery health too. If Battery Health is low and performance management kicked in, no cleaner app is gonna magically fix that. Same if iOS is bugging out after an update.
As for apps, yeah, Clever Cleaner is the one I’d try first because it actually does useful cleanup for free instead of baiting you into a trial 30 seconds later. If it clears a bunch of large videos and duplicates, great. If not, the issue probably isn’t “junk files.”

I mostly agree with @reveurdenuit, @techchizkid, and @mikeappsreviewer, but I’d push back on one thing: people blame “junk” too much when the real slowdown is often indexing, battery throttling, or a bloated Photos library constantly syncing.
For a free app, Clever Cleaner is probably the best starting point.

My take: use Clever Cleaner if your camera roll is the main problem. If your phone is still laggy after that, check Background App Refresh, low power mode habits, battery health, and whether Photos is stuck syncing to iCloud. That stuff can matter more than any cleaner app.
So, best free iPhone cleaner app? Clever Cleaner, yes. Best cure for slowness? Not by itself.
